Shopping in Morzine
Morzine, as well as being a ski resort, is also one of the larger towns in the alps. For those who fancy a morning or a day off the slopes, there is a wealth of fashion shops, souvenir shops and of course ski and snowboarding shops. Morzine has market day on Wednesdays, a nice opportunity to see a real French market in action and maybe pick up a few special bits and pieces.
Services in Morzine
The town centre boasts a large fitness centre with a large indoor ice skating rink. The local Morzine team is a big player in the French national Ice Hockey league and official matches take place there most weeks, which is a fun night out. There is also an outdoor ice rink in the central square that is open to the public. There is a cinema in town that shows some films in English. Banks, chemists and supermarkets are all well provided.
Ski Schools in Morzine
Morzine and the wider Portes du Soleil have a number of ski schools, including the BASS school, one of the original British schools based in France. Several of the instructors at BASS are BASI trainers, they train others to qualify as instructors themselves. Morzine also has specialist snowboard schools. Morzine Nightlife
From mountain restaurants to hotel bars at the foot of the pistes to late-night bars in town, you're never far from a drink if you want one. Morzine is popular with seasonaires, so it has a very lively night life. There are English style pubs, French bars and hotel bars. There are also a couple of clubs with distinct discotheque feel to them that are open until about 5am most nights.
Getting Around Morzine
Morzine operates a free bus service around town that provides access to all the lifts into the Portes du Soleil area. The bus stop near The Edge chalets in Montriond leads to Ardent, which takes you to the centre of the Portes du Soleil with quick access to Avoriaz, Chatel or Champery. The bus also travels into Morzine village and operates until 6pm, after which there is a reliable taxi service and taxi rank in town.
History of Morzine
The town itself pre-dates alpine skiing and so has a very traditional Haute-Savoie alpine feel to it, unlike some of the more modern French resorts. Morzine first became a ski holiday destination in the 1920s, with the first cable car being installed in 1934. Avoriaz, with its chalet style architecture, was developed in the 1960s, leading to the creation of the Portes du Soleil by linking the Morzine / Les Gets ski area with Champery and Les Crossets in Switzerland.
